In July 1841 the poet John Clare escaped from an asylum in Essex to return to his home village, Northborough in Northhampton.

He spent four days walking the roads and slept in fields and ditches at night , "I lay down with my head towards the north to show myself the steering point in the morning".

The journal he kept of the event "Journey out of Essex " was the inspiration for the six paintings in the series.
